Waiting4
Waiting4 is an ambient dub step song with its title taken from a vocal sample. It is the culmination of a period of listening to music and then creating demos based on these influences to then flesh out. Many influences were taken from strong emotional themes in music from artists including d-Bridge, Kito, Vangelis, Eminem, Alix Perez and William Orbit. The concept was to use as few elements as possible so that each could stand out and have more room for expression. This allowed for layered and big sounds with noticeable modulations and variations that stand out in the mix. Each sound and instrument filled a criterion of a vintage and raw sound but also being of a high enough quality relevant to modern sound standards. The production involved recording unique sounds and Foley effects outside of the studio which were then manipulated into the arrangement. For the arrangement an evolutionary theme was used from atmospheric beginnings into the main sections whilst adding new sounds along the way before dropping down into more atmospherics and musical arrangements and ending with atmospherics.
Promised Land
Promised Land is a liquid drum and bass song that mixes up old school sounds with newer elements. Mixing techniques were kept old school by staying at tasteful levels and not overcrowding the mix. Production began from a simple riff which was used to build old school jungle type sounds around. Classic break beats fattened up with layers created the skeleton of the song. These styles of breaks allowed for heavy weight layers of bass and lush sounds to flow around. The production process evolved very quickly with a flowing arrangement creating sounds almost morphing into each other but also switching things up with progression. The structure was built for mixing with a short and simple intro that can easily be dropped in and cut across by the DJ. For the build up the idea was to create something unique that signified the call for the drop and to do this a historic sample by Martin Luther King was used. His voice and performances were very unique and at the level of a professional singer. This gives the song its own identity and pays tribute to the great man.
